Beware the Shrinking Imagination
Dr. Timothy Eatman challenges those working across higher education to practice the five values of imagination: Hope,
History, Passion, Empathy, and Planning.
The 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience is made possible through the generous support of the American Talent Initiative (ATI), Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the Gray Foundation.
Over the course of the three-day hybrid institute, participants from across the country gathered together in both virtual and in-person spaces to discuss and design responses to their institutions’ most pressing challenges to academic equity. A total of 15 interactive panel sessions with nearly 50 speakers were offered over the course of the three-day institute. “A Toolkit for Culturally Engaging Advising”
Inspired by scholarship on culturally engaging advising and by the work that CNDLS has done on inclusive pedagogy, the College has formed a team to devise a framework for culturally engaging advising. The idea is to come up with a toolkit for both formal academic advisors (deans) at Georgetown, using the College as the starting point, and for faculty advisors. As with the CNDLS inclusive pedagogy toolkit, this would be a resource the College Dean’s Office would produce both for its own use as well as for other dean’s offices that may be interested. The faculty toolkit could be used by departments or individual faculty members as they see fit.
“Training Student Leaders”
We aim to develop a training experience that builds undergraduate student leaders skills in using inclusive practices while providing academic peer support. The training would be adapted for use with various student leader groups including tutors, academic coaches, and supplemental instruction leaders.
“Understanding Academic Equity Issues”
Help develop a framework for how we can use student data analyses/reports to help ourselves and other stakeholders (faculty, staff, academic leadership) to more fully understand academic equity issues, and to support positive action in terms of how to address those issues.
